Who directed the 2017 film Logan?

The story behind the answer

James Mangold directed the 2017 film Logan.

Logan presents Hugh Jackman's final leading appearance as Wolverine in the original X-Men film series. Set in a bleak future, the story follows an aging Logan as he protects the young mutant Laura from pursuers connected to a program that created enhanced children.

Mangold had already directed The Wolverine, released in 2013, so Logan became his second film centered on the character. The movie takes a more grounded, western-influenced approach than many earlier superhero releases and was widely noted for its mature tone and emotional conclusion.

Gavin Hood directed X-Men Origins: Wolverine, while Bryan Singer directed several main X-Men entries. David Leitch directed Deadpool 2. These neighboring Wolverine and X-Men credits are common sources of confusion, but Mangold is the director specifically associated with Logan.
