Iain Softley directed the 1995 film Hackers.
The film follows teenage computer enthusiasts who become targets of a corporate extortion scheme. Jonny Lee Miller plays Dade Murphy, while Angelina Jolie plays Kate Libby, known online as Acid Burn. The story combines early internet culture, youth subculture, corporate crime and cybercrime thriller conventions.
Hackers was released in the United States on September 15, 1995. It was not a major box-office success at first, but later developed a strong cult following, especially among viewers interested in 1990s computer culture. Its exaggerated visual style and colorful depiction of cyberspace are often remembered more than its technical realism.
Softley later directed films including The Wings of the Dove, K-PAX and Inkheart. The film’s cast also includes Fisher Stevens as the villainous computer criminal Eugene Belford, called The Plague.
