Who directed the 1981 action film "Raiders of the Lost Ark"? Steven Spielberg directed it. The film introduced Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, an archaeologist racing Nazi agents to find the Ark of the Covenant in 1936.

George Lucas conceived the character and produced the movie, while Lawrence Kasdan wrote the screenplay from a story by Lucas and Philip Kaufman. Lucas’s role often causes the common mix-up, but Spielberg was the director responsible for staging and filming the adventure.

Spielberg joined the project after Kaufman, Lucas’s preferred director, became unavailable. The movie was filmed in locations including Tunisia, France, Hawaii, and England, and became one of the defining action-adventure films of the 1980s. Its success launched a major Indiana Jones franchise.
