Who directed Stanley Kubrick’s 1960 film Spartacus?
Answer
Stanley Kubrick
Answer
Stanley Kubrick
Stanley Kubrick directed the 1960 historical epic Spartacus.
The film follows the enslaved gladiator Spartacus as he leads a major revolt against the Roman Republic. Kirk Douglas stars in the title role and also served as the production’s executive producer. Douglas hired Kubrick after director Anthony Mann left the project early in production.
Spartacus was adapted from Howard Fast’s 1951 novel, with a screenplay by Dalton Trumbo. The production was one of Kubrick’s largest studio assignments and was made before he moved into the more independent working arrangements associated with his later films.
Kubrick reportedly had conflicts with Douglas and other collaborators over creative control. Even so, Spartacus became a major commercial success and won four Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Peter Ustinov.
