Who directed Rocky III?

Sylvester Stallone directed Rocky III. He also wrote the screenplay and returned as Rocky Balboa, making the third film the first entry in which he directed the character’s story.

Rocky III begins after Rocky has become a successful champion and public figure. His comfortable life is disrupted by Clubber Lang, a younger and aggressive challenger who defeats him in their first fight. Rocky then rebuilds his confidence and training under the guidance of Apollo Creed.

The film was released in 1982 and introduced several lasting elements of the series, including the song “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor. It also features Hulk Hogan as the professional wrestler Thunderlips in a memorable exhibition sequence.

John G. Avildsen directed the original Rocky and Rocky V, while George P. Cosmatos directed Rocky IV. Ryan Coogler later directed the first Creed film. Stallone’s work on Rocky III therefore marks a distinct change in the franchise’s creative leadership.
