Tarsem Singh directed R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion” music video. The Indian filmmaker shaped the clip into a series of dreamlike, religiously charged tableaux rather than a conventional performance video, giving the song a visual identity as distinctive as its mandolin riff.

The concept combined Michael Stipe’s wish for a straightforward performance video with Singh’s interest in melodramatic Indian filmmaking. Singh also drew inspiration from Gabriel García Márquez’s story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” and from paintings by Caravaggio. The finished video includes imagery associated with Saint Sebastian, the biblical Incredulity of Thomas, and Hindu deities.

The clip became one of the most celebrated music videos of the early 1990s. At the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards, it won Video of the Year, Best Group Video, Breakthrough Video, Best Art Direction, Best Direction, and Best Editing. Its director is sometimes confused with Michel Gondry or Anton Corbijn, but neither directed this R.E.M. video.
