The project grew from informal performances and recording sessions involving R.E.M. members Bill Berry, Peter Buck and Mike Mills. Michael Stipe participated in some early live appearances, while Warren Zevon later joined the group’s musical orbit during sessions for his 1987 album *Sentimental Hygiene*.

During late-night studio work, the musicians recorded a set of mostly blues and rock covers without initially planning to release them. Giant Records eventually issued the recordings in 1990 under the name Hindu Love Gods, making the album an unusual collaboration between three R.E.M. members and Zevon.

The record is often remembered for its spirited cover of Prince’s “Raspberry Beret.” It is not the same project as Automatic Baby, which paired members of R.E.M. and U2, or Tired Pony, a later project associated with Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey.
