Who directed Pixar’s 2013 film Monsters University?

The story behind the answer

Dan Scanlon directed Pixar’s 2013 film Monsters University.

The film is set before Monsters, Inc. and follows Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan as university students. Scanlon’s story explores their opposing paths toward a career in scaring and the experiences that eventually turn them from rivals into close friends.

Monsters University was Scanlon’s first feature as a director. Before making it, he worked in story and animation roles at Pixar. His direction combines the visual scale of a campus comedy with the established character designs and comic tone of the earlier film.

Pete Docter directed Monsters, Inc., so the two films have different directors even though they share their main characters. Lee Unkrich, another Pixar filmmaker, is also sometimes incorrectly named because of his work on other studio features.
