Steven Spielberg directed Jurassic Park (1993), the science-fiction film about cloned dinosaurs escaping a theme park.
The film adapts Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel and follows paleontologists Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler during a disastrous preview visit to a dinosaur attraction on Isla Nublar. Spielberg combined animatronic creatures from Stan Winston Studios with computer-generated imagery by Industrial Light & Magic.
Jurassic Park became a major commercial and critical success and helped demonstrate that digital visual effects could work convincingly alongside practical effects. It also became the highest-grossing film worldwide at the time, surpassing Spielberg’s own E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
A common mix-up is confusing the director with producer Kathleen Kennedy or composer John Williams. Spielberg directed the original film and its 1997 sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
