Who directed Jamiroquai’s “Virtual Insanity” music video?

The story behind the answer

Jonathan Glazer directed Jamiroquai’s “Virtual Insanity” music video.

The 1996 video shows Jay Kay performing in a nearly empty room while the floor appears to slide beneath him and furniture moves in unusual ways. The illusion was created by moving the set and camera relationship rather than by digitally moving the floor itself.

Glazer’s direction made the performance look continuous and physically impossible. Jay Kay’s choreography, including his distinctive hat and smooth footwork, became as recognizable as the song. The video helped introduce Jamiroquai to a broad international audience.

“Virtual Insanity” won four awards at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, including Best Special Effects and Best Cinematography. A frequent misunderstanding is that the video relies primarily on computer-generated effects; its famous central illusion was chiefly achieved through practical set movement and carefully controlled camera work.
