Who directed Disney's live-action musical film Newsies?

The story behind the answer

Kenny Ortega directed Disney's live-action musical film Newsies.

Released in 1992, Newsies dramatizes the 1899 newsboys' strike in New York City. The film follows Jack Kelly and other young newspaper sellers as they organize against publisher Joseph Pulitzer after a rise in the price they must pay for their newspaper bundles.

Ortega was already known as a choreographer, and Newsies placed unusual emphasis on large-scale dance numbers. The musical's songs were written by Alan Menken, with lyrics by Jack Feldman. Although the movie was not initially a major box-office success, its energetic choreography and cast helped it develop a strong cult following.

The story later became a successful stage musical. A revised stage version premiered at the Paper Mill Playhouse in 2011 before opening on Broadway in 2012. Christian Bale starred as Jack Kelly in the original film, years before becoming known for major dramatic and superhero roles.
