Nelson Mandela married Graça Machel in 1998.

The couple married on Mandela’s 80th birthday, 18 July 1998, at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg. Machel was a Mozambican politician and humanitarian who had previously served as Mozambique’s minister of education and culture.

Machel had also been married to Samora Machel, Mozambique’s first president, who died in a plane crash in 1986. Her marriage to Mandela made her the only person to have been first lady of two countries: Mozambique and South Africa.

Mandela’s marriage to Machel was his third. His first marriage, to Evelyn Mase, ended in divorce, and his second, to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, ended in divorce in 1996. Mandela and Machel remained together until his death in 2013.
