Nelson Mandela received the Order of Mapungubwe in 2002.
The Order of Mapungubwe is one of South Africa’s national orders. It recognizes excellence and exceptional achievement, especially in areas that serve South Africa’s interests. The order takes its name from Mapungubwe, an ancient settlement and trading center in present-day Limpopo province.
Mandela was among the recipients when the order was first awarded in 2002. He received its highest class, the Platinum category, in recognition of exceptional and outstanding achievement. The award reflected his international leadership and contribution to reconciliation and democracy.
South Africa has several other national orders, including the Order of Luthuli, named for ANC leader Albert Luthuli, and the Order of the Baobab. Those names should not be substituted for Mapungubwe when identifying Mandela’s 2002 national honor.
