Who did Georgia O'Keeffe marry in 1924?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe married photographer and art promoter Alfred Stieglitz in 1924.

Stieglitz first encountered O'Keeffe's work through drawings that his friend Anita Pollitzer showed him in 1916. He exhibited her art at his New York gallery, 291, without her initial knowledge, beginning a professional relationship that became personal. Stieglitz was 23 years older than O'Keeffe and was already a major figure in American photography and modern-art circles.

The couple married in New Jersey on December 24, 1924. Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe extensively, producing hundreds of portraits and nudes over many years. Their relationship was artistically important but not always easy, and they often lived apart during O'Keeffe's later years in New Mexico.

Stieglitz died in 1946. O'Keeffe continued to develop her own career and moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949, three years after his death.
