Who developed the first successful inactivated polio vaccine?
Answer
Jonas Salk
Answer
Jonas Salk
Jonas Salk developed the first successful inactivated polio vaccine.
Salk’s vaccine used poliovirus that had been killed, or inactivated, so it could stimulate immunity without causing polio. Large field trials in 1954 involved more than 1.8 million children in the United States, making them among the largest medical experiments of their time. The vaccine was licensed in 1955.
Albert Sabin later developed a live attenuated oral polio vaccine, which became widely used in many countries. The two vaccines differ in how they are made and administered, but both contributed greatly to reducing poliomyelitis. Salk’s vaccine is commonly called IPV, or inactivated poliovirus vaccine.
