Who designed the first Hermès silk scarf, Jeu des Omnibus et Dames Blanches?
Answer
Hugo Grygkar
Answer
Hugo Grygkar
Hugo Grygkar designed the first Hermès silk scarf, Jeu des Omnibus et Dames Blanches.
Grygkar was an illustrator associated with the early development of Hermès’s carré scarves. His design introduced the company’s characteristic combination of silk, elaborate line work, and references to travel and equestrian culture. The scarf was launched in 1937, giving Hermès a new product category beyond saddlery and leather equipment.
The designer’s name is often mixed up with members of the Dumas family, who led Hermès during important periods of the company’s growth. Robert Dumas was a major Hermès executive and designer of the Kelly bag, while Jean-Louis Dumas later served as chief executive.
Hermès scarves subsequently became known for collaborations with numerous artists. Each new carré generally carries the designer’s name or signature, making authorship an important part of the product’s collectible history.
