Who designed the famous 1933 diagram of the London Underground network?
Answer
Harry Beck
Answer
Harry Beck
Harry Beck designed the famous 1933 diagram of the London Underground network.
Beck was an electrical draughtsman who developed the map while working for London Underground. His design abandoned geographically accurate distances in favour of a clear schematic system based on horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines. Stations were arranged to make interchanges and routes easy to follow.
The diagram was initially treated as an experimental idea, but London Underground eventually accepted it for public use. Its success helped establish the modern style of transit map now used by metro systems around the world.
Beck’s map is sometimes mistaken for a conventional street map. It does not show the true shape of London or the precise distance between stations; instead, it prioritises network relationships. Edward Johnston created the Underground typeface, while Charles Holden designed many station buildings, so those names belong to different parts of the system’s visual identity.
