Which London Underground station replaced British Museum station in 1933?

The story behind the answer

Holborn station replaced British Museum station in 1933.

The Central London Railway opened British Museum station in 1900. As passenger demand grew, the station’s short platforms and limited facilities became inadequate. Holborn station, located nearby, was rebuilt with longer platforms and better interchange potential when the Piccadilly line was extended and improved.

British Museum station closed permanently in 1933, and Holborn became the principal station serving the area. Holborn itself had opened in 1906 on the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway, later incorporated into the Piccadilly line.

The former British Museum station was close to the British Museum, which can cause confusion in modern travel questions. The museum is now most directly served by Holborn, while Tottenham Court Road and Russell Square are also within walking distance depending on the destination.
