Who designed the distinctive Suzuki GSX1100S Katana motorcycle?

The story behind the answer

Hans Muth designed the distinctive Suzuki GSX1100S Katana motorcycle.

Muth worked with the German industrial design firm Target Design, alongside Jan Fellstrom and Hans-Georg Kasten. Their angular concept motorcycle was developed for Suzuki and became the basis for the Katana production line introduced in the early 1980s.

The design used sharp edges, an integrated front fairing, and a strong visual line from the tank toward the headlight. It looked very different from the rounded styling common on many motorcycles of the period, making the Katana immediately recognizable.

The Katana name is sometimes associated with the entire family of Suzuki models rather than one machine. The best-known early version was the GSX1100S, but Suzuki also produced smaller-displacement Katana variants. Muth is the key credited designer behind the original styling.
