Who designed MTV’s original multicolored logo?

The story behind the answer

Manhattan Design designed MTV’s original multicolored logo.

The New York design firm created the distinctive block-letter M with a television-shaped T in 1981. The logo was intentionally flexible: its basic form remained recognizable while its surface could change into different colors, patterns, and images.

That adaptable identity matched MTV’s original programming concept. The channel was built around music videos, a medium characterized by rapid visual change, so a static corporate mark would have been less appropriate than a system capable of constant variation.

MTV launched in the United States on August 1, 1981, and its logo quickly became one of the most recognizable symbols in youth media. The designers are sometimes confused with later branding agencies, but Manhattan Design is the firm credited with the original mark. The logo’s moving, decorated variations also helped make channel branding part of MTV’s culture rather than merely an identifying label.
