MTV UK and Ireland began broadcasting as a separate channel in 1997.
The channel launched on July 1, 1997, replacing the earlier pan-European MTV Europe service for viewers in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The change reflected MTV’s broader move toward regional channels with locally relevant presenters, schedules, and programming.
Before the split, MTV Europe had served multiple countries from a shared service. Regionalization allowed MTV to tailor its brand and commercial strategy to individual television markets. The British and Irish service later became known simply as MTV UK in much of its branding.
This date is often confused with MTV Europe’s original launch, which occurred on August 1, 1987. It is also separate from the launch of MTV India in 1996. MTV UK and Ireland subsequently developed programming aimed specifically at British and Irish audiences while retaining the global MTV identity.
