Who designed Cape Verde's current national flag?

Who designed Cape Verde’s current national flag? Pedro Gregório. He designed the flag adopted on 22 September 1992, when Cape Verde replaced its original post-independence flag.

The modern design uses blue bands, narrow white and red stripes, and a circle of ten yellow stars. The stars represent Cape Verde’s principal islands, while the blue evokes the surrounding Atlantic Ocean and sky. White symbolizes peace, and red represents effort.

The flag marked a political and visual shift away from the earlier design, which used the red, yellow, and green associated with the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde. That earlier flag closely resembled Guinea-Bissau’s because of the two countries’ once-planned political union.

A common mix-up is to identify the flag with the older PAIGC-inspired design or to count twelve stars, as on the European Union flag. Cape Verde’s current flag has ten stars, not twelve.
