Who created the TV series The X-Files?

The story behind the answer

Who created the TV series The X-Files? Chris Carter.

Chris Carter created the television series The X-Files, which premiered on Fox on September 10, 1993. The science-fiction drama follows FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they investigate unexplained phenomena, alleged conspiracies, and cases dismissed as the “X-Files.” Carter also served as a writer and executive producer, shaping the show’s mythology and tone.

The series blended two formats: stand-alone “monster-of-the-week” stories and a continuing alien-conspiracy storyline. David Duchovny played Mulder, the believer, while Gillian Anderson played Scully, the skeptical medical doctor and scientist. Their contrasting viewpoints became central to the show’s appeal and cultural impact.

Several other writers and producers are strongly associated with The X-Files, including Glen Morgan, James Wong, Frank Spotnitz, and Vince Gilligan. They wrote or produced important episodes, but they did not create the series. The original run lasted from 1993 to 2002, followed by revival seasons in 2016 and 2018.
