Who created the Netflix series Squid Game?

Hwang Dong-hyuk created the Netflix series Squid Game.

The South Korean filmmaker also wrote and directed the first season, turning familiar children’s games into a lethal contest for financially desperate contestants. The contrast between playful settings and extreme violence became one of the show’s defining features.

Hwang developed the concept during a period when he was thinking about economic inequality and social competition. The series was released worldwide by Netflix on September 17, 2021, and became an international hit despite being primarily in Korean.

Other Korean filmmakers listed as wrong options are prominent directors, but they did not create Squid Game. Yeon Sang-ho made Train to Busan, Park Chan-wook directed films such as Oldboy, and Bong Joon-ho directed Parasite.
