Which Netflix series is based on the comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá? The Umbrella Academy is the adaptation.

The Netflix series draws from the Dark Horse Comics title created by Gerard Way, the musician best known as My Chemical Romance’s lead singer, and Brazilian artist Gabriel Bá. The comic’s first six-issue story, The Apocalypse Suite, ran from September 2007 to February 2008.

The television adaptation premiered on February 15, 2019. It follows estranged adopted siblings with unusual abilities who reunite after the death of their adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, and confront world-threatening crises.

The show expands and rearranges elements from the comics rather than reproducing every storyline exactly. That distinction can cause confusion with Sweet Tooth, Locke & Key, and The Sandman, which are also Netflix comic adaptations but come from different creators and publishers. The Umbrella Academy’s comic publisher is Dark Horse Comics.
