Who created the McDonald’s “Speedee Service System” with his brother Maurice?
Answer
Richard McDonald
Answer
Richard McDonald
Richard McDonald created the McDonald’s “Speedee Service System” with his brother Maurice.
Richard and Maurice McDonald reorganized their San Bernardino, California, restaurant in 1948. They reduced the menu, designed a kitchen organized like an assembly line, used self-service ordering, and standardized portions and cooking methods. The system made meals faster and more predictable than traditional drive-in service.
The brothers’ innovation became the operational foundation of McDonald’s branding. Customers encountered the same basic menu, procedures, and visual promises of speed at different locations. The word “Speedee” was also used in early promotional identity, including the chain’s first mascot.
Ray Kroc did not invent the system. He became the brothers’ franchise agent in the 1950s and expanded the model nationally. That distinction matters because Kroc built the corporation’s scale, while the McDonald brothers developed the original restaurant system.
