Who created the Ferrero Rocher chocolate confection?

The story behind the answer

Michele Ferrero created the Ferrero Rocher chocolate confection, which was introduced in 1982.

Ferrero Rocher combines a whole hazelnut, a creamy hazelnut filling, a wafer shell, and a chocolate-and-hazelnut coating. The confection was developed by Michele Ferrero, an Italian businessman and the son of Pietro Ferrero, who founded the Ferrero company.

The name refers to the rocky appearance of the confection and to Rocher de Massabielle, a grotto at the Catholic shrine of Lourdes in France. “Rocher” is French for “rock,” matching the product’s rough outer texture.

People sometimes confuse Michele Ferrero with his father Pietro or with Giovanni Ferrero, Michele’s son. Pietro established the family business, while Michele expanded it internationally and developed several major products. Ferrero Rocher became especially associated with gold foil, gift boxes, and festive occasions.
