Who created the comic-book character Hellboy?

The story behind the answer

Mike Mignola created Hellboy, who first appeared in a promotional comic published by Dark Horse Comics in 1993.

Hellboy is a red-skinned paranormal investigator with a stone right hand, filed-down horns, and a dry sense of humor. Although he is technically a demon, he works with the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense and generally chooses to protect humanity.

Mignola developed the character’s distinctive visual style using heavy shadows, angular shapes, folklore, and references to legends from many cultures. Hellboy’s stories frequently combine supernatural investigation with questions about destiny and free will.

The character’s first full-length comic was Seed of Destruction, published in 1994. Hellboy later appeared in animated films, live-action films, and crossover stories, but Mignola’s comics remain the source material and established continuity.
