Who created the BBC television series Sherlock with Steven Moffat?

The story behind the answer

Mark Gatiss co-created the BBC television series Sherlock with Steven Moffat.

Gatiss and Moffat developed the series as a modern adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories. Their version moved Holmes and Watson from Victorian London into contemporary London, while preserving recognizable characters, cases, and relationships.

Gatiss also acted in the programme as Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s older brother. Moffat served as a principal writer and showrunner, while Gatiss wrote or co-wrote several episodes. This combination of writing and acting made Gatiss especially central to the show’s identity.

A common mix-up is to credit only Moffat because he was strongly associated with the programme’s scripts. The series was officially created by both Gatiss and Moffat, with Sue Vertue producing through Hartswood Films.
