Who created Pikachu’s original character design for the Pokémon franchise?

Atsuko Nishida created Pikachu’s original character design for the Pokémon franchise.

Nishida designed Pikachu at the request of lead designer Ken Sugimori. Sugimori then finalized the design for use in the games. The result was a small, yellow, Electric-type Pokémon with a lightning-bolt-shaped tail and red cheek pouches.

Pikachu was not originally the only candidate for the franchise’s public face, but its appearance in the Pokémon anime made it globally recognizable. In the series, Pikachu became Ash Ketchum’s companion and the most prominent Pokémon character.

Pikachu first appeared in the Pokémon video games in 1996. Pichu, its pre-evolution, was added in Pokémon Gold and Silver. Pikachu has since appeared in games, animation, trading cards, films, toys, and promotional events, becoming the franchise’s mascot.
