Who conceived and created the Billy Joel jukebox musical Movin' Out?
Answer
Twyla Tharp
Answer
Twyla Tharp
Twyla Tharp conceived and created the Billy Joel jukebox musical Movin' Out. The show uses Joel's existing songs to follow young people from Long Island through romance, military service, the Vietnam War, and its aftermath.
Tharp approached Joel in 2000 with a 20-minute concept video. Joel approved the idea and contributed the music, but Tharp shaped the production as a dance-centered theatrical work rather than a conventional book musical. The dancers do not sing; a pianist and band perform the vocals from a platform above the stage.
Movin' Out began previews in Chicago in 2002 before opening on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on October 24, 2002. It ran for 1,303 performances and 28 previews, earned Tony nominations for Best Musical and Direction, and won Tharp the Tony for Best Choreography. Bob Fosse, Julie Taymor, and Susan Stroman are notable theatre figures, but none created this Joel musical.
