The piece is connected to Mascagni’s 1890 opera Cavalleria rusticana. Its music is based on the opera’s famous Intermezzo, a lyrical orchestral passage often performed separately from the full opera. For Bocelli’s recording, the melody was adapted into a sacred vocal setting in Latin.
A common mix-up is crediting Steven Mercurio as the composer. Mercurio arranged the version recorded by Bocelli, while Mascagni composed the underlying music. Sacred Arias, released in 1999, presents Bocelli performing religious and devotional works with orchestral and choral forces.
Cavalleria rusticana is one of the defining works of the Italian verismo tradition, which emphasized emotionally intense stories and realistic characters. Mascagni’s Intermezzo became especially famous because of its serene contrast with the opera’s violent drama.
