Who composed the original score for Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus?

The story behind the answer

Alex North composed the original score for Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus.

North’s music gives the historical epic a broad dramatic sound, combining forceful orchestral writing with quieter themes for romance, loss, and political struggle. The score supports the film’s movement from gladiatorial spectacle to rebellion and military conflict.

Spartacus was released in 1960 and stars Kirk Douglas as the enslaved gladiator who leads a major revolt against the Roman Republic. Laurence Olivier plays Marcus Licinius Crassus, while Jean Simmons plays Varinia. The film was produced by Douglas and directed by Kubrick after Anthony Mann was dismissed early in production.

North was a major American film composer whose other work included A Streetcar Named Desire, Viva Zapata!, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Spartacus is sometimes confused with other Roman epics scored by composers such as Miklós Rózsa, but North wrote the music for Kubrick’s film.
