Roger Federer completed a career Grand Slam by winning the 2009 French Open men’s singles title.
Federer defeated Sweden’s Robin Söderling in the final, 6–1, 7–6 (7–1), 6–4. It was Federer’s first French Open championship after losing the previous three Paris finals to Rafael Nadal, who had won the tournament four years in a row.
The victory completed Federer’s collection of all four major singles titles: the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open. He became only the sixth man to complete the career Grand Slam in the Open Era. Federer also matched Pete Sampras’s then-record of 14 men’s major singles titles.
Söderling’s run was significant too: he defeated Nadal in the fourth round, ending Nadal’s unbeaten French Open record. That result opened the draw for Federer, who then survived a tough semifinal against Juan Martín del Potro before winning the title.
