Who compiled and produced the original Woodstock soundtrack album?

Eric Blackstead compiled and produced the original Woodstock soundtrack album. The release, titled Woodstock: Music from the Original Soundtrack and More, presented selected live performances from the 1969 festival.

Blackstead’s job involved turning a huge quantity of concert recordings into a coherent commercial album. The original triple-LP set included performances by artists such as Richie Havens, Joan Baez, The Who, Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Sly and the Family Stone, and Jimi Hendrix. Stage announcements and crowd sounds were also included to evoke the festival atmosphere.

Eddie Kramer is a common mix-up because he served as a sound engineer during the event and worked extensively with Hendrix. Michael Wadleigh directed the Woodstock documentary film, while Ahmet Ertegun was a major Atlantic Records executive—not the album’s credited compiler and producer.

The soundtrack was released on Cotillion, an Atlantic subsidiary, on May 11, 1970. It became one of the most commercially important documents of the festival and was later expanded and reissued in multiple formats.
