Who commanded Apollo 7?

The story behind the answer

Who commanded Apollo 7? Wally Schirra commanded Apollo 7.

Walter M. “Wally” Schirra Jr. led the first crewed Apollo mission, launched on October 11, 1968. His crewmates were Command Module Pilot Donn Eisele and Lunar Module Pilot Walter Cunningham. Although Apollo 7 did not carry a lunar module or travel to the Moon, it was a critical full-duration test of the Apollo command and service module in Earth orbit.

Schirra was one of NASA’s original Mercury Seven astronauts and had already flown Mercury’s Sigma 7 and Gemini 6A. That experience made him the only astronaut to fly in all three of NASA’s early human-spaceflight programs: Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. He was also known for a cautious, strongly independent command style.

Apollo 7 lasted 11 days and tested spacecraft systems, rendezvous procedures, service-propulsion-engine firings, and live television broadcasts. The crew’s success restored confidence after the Apollo 1 fire and allowed NASA to accelerate Apollo 8 into a crewed lunar-orbit mission. Schirra retired from NASA and the Navy in 1969 after Apollo 7.
