Answer
Ronald Evans
Which Apollo astronaut orbited the Moon alone during Apollo 17? Ronald Evans remained alone in lunar orbit while his crewmates landed.
Evans was Apollo 17’s command module pilot. When commander Eugene Cernan and lunar module pilot Harrison Schmitt descended in Challenger to the Taurus–Littrow valley, Evans stayed aboard the command and service module America, circling the Moon and keeping the spacecraft ready for rendezvous.
His solo duty was scientifically active, not simply a wait. Evans photographed the lunar surface, operated instruments in the spacecraft’s scientific instrument module, and collected observations needed to complement the work being done on the ground.
The other names in the choices were command module pilots on different missions: Ken Mattingly flew Apollo 16, Stuart Roosa flew Apollo 14, and Alfred Worden flew Apollo 15. Each also spent time alone in lunar orbit while crewmates explored the surface, but Evans was the one assigned to Apollo 17.
