Who co-patented the riveted trousers later sold by Levi Strauss & Co.?

The story behind the answer

Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss co-patented the riveted trousers later sold by Levi Strauss & Co.

Jacob Davis was the tailor who developed the practical reinforcement method. Levi Strauss was the San Francisco merchant who supplied materials and helped finance the patent and business. Their partnership combined Davis’s tailoring idea with Strauss’s commercial resources.

The patent was granted in 1873 and covered the use of copper rivets to strengthen points of strain, especially pocket corners. This was a focused construction innovation rather than a patent on every pair of blue trousers. Later jeans makers could use similar designs after the patent expired.

The partnership also explains why the history of jeans is not attributable to only one person. Davis played the central inventive role, while Strauss helped turn the design into a scalable clothing business. The company bearing Strauss’s name became the most famous commercial descendant of that collaboration.
