Kurashiki is widely known as the birthplace of Japan’s modern denim industry.
Kurashiki is a city in Okayama Prefecture, and its Kojima district became an important textile center. The area already had deep experience in cotton production and weaving, which helped local manufacturers move into denim after the Second World War.
Kojima became especially associated with high-quality Japanese jeans, including carefully woven fabrics, traditional shuttle looms, and detailed finishing. Many Japanese denim companies and specialist workshops are based there, making the district a destination for denim enthusiasts.
Kurashiki should not be confused with the origin of denim itself, which is linked to European textile history, or with the American cities associated with Levi Strauss and mass-market jeans. Its importance lies in Japan’s later development of premium, craft-focused denim production.
