What occupation did Jacob Davis have when he developed riveted denim work trousers?

The story behind the answer

Jacob Davis was a tailor when he developed riveted denim work trousers.

Davis worked in Reno, Nevada, where he made practical clothing for laborers, including horse blankets and durable trousers. A customer’s request for especially strong pants led him to reinforce stress points with copper rivets, particularly at pocket corners and the base of the button fly.

Davis recognized that the idea could have commercial value but lacked the money to patent and market it alone. He wrote to dry-goods merchant Levi Strauss, who supplied the fabric for many garments. The two men became business partners, and their U.S. patent for riveted clothing was granted in 1873.

Davis is sometimes described simply as an inventor, but tailoring was central to his working life and to the practical origin of riveted jeans. Levi Strauss provided commercial reach, while Davis contributed the construction idea and garment-making expertise.
