Answer
Mel and Patricia Ziegler
Answer
Mel and Patricia Ziegler
Mel and Patricia Ziegler co-founded the Banana Republic clothing brand in 1978.
The Zieglers launched the business in Mill Valley, California, as the Banana Republic Travel & Safari Clothing Company. Before becoming fashion executives, they worked at the San Francisco Chronicle: Mel was a reporter and Patricia was an illustrator and courtroom sketch artist. Their shared interest in travel, vintage garments, and adventure shaped the company’s original identity.
The brand began with military-surplus and travel-inspired clothing rather than the polished office wear associated with its later reputation. After Mel returned from an assignment in Australia with a British Burma jacket, the couple acquired surplus garments, including Spanish Civil War paratrooper shirts, and sold them at a flea market. Their stores and illustrated catalogs presented clothing alongside fictionalized explorer narratives and travel dispatches.
Gap purchased the two-store company in 1983. It shortened the name to Banana Republic and repositioned the retailer as a more upscale fashion brand. Mickey Drexler was an important Gap executive, and Don Fisher co-founded Gap, but neither man co-founded Banana Republic. Steve Jobs was unrelated to the clothing company’s creation.
