Who co-founded Nike with Phil Knight in 1964?

The story behind the answer

Bill Bowerman co-founded Nike with Phil Knight in 1964.

The business began as Blue Ribbon Sports, a distributor of Japanese running shoes. Knight had studied under Bowerman, who was his track coach at the University of Oregon and later became an influential shoe innovator.

Bowerman experimented with footwear designs to make running shoes lighter and more effective. His famous waffle sole was inspired by a household waffle iron and became an important part of the company’s product history.

Blue Ribbon Sports adopted the Nike name in 1971. The company’s famous Swoosh was designed by Carolyn Davidson, not by Bowerman or Knight. Nike was named after the Greek goddess of victory, while its first retail store had opened earlier under the Blue Ribbon Sports name.
