Harland Sanders developed KFC into a fast-food franchise beginning in 1952.
Sanders operated a roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, where he prepared chicken using a pressure-frying method and a closely guarded seasoning blend. He later traveled to restaurants and offered franchise agreements for his preparation system.
The first KFC franchise opened in South Salt Lake, Utah, in 1952, operated by Pete Harman. Harman is credited with helping popularize the name Kentucky Fried Chicken and the bucket meal concept.
Sanders was already in his sixties when franchising expanded nationally, making his business story unusual. KFC originally used the full name Kentucky Fried Chicken; the abbreviation KFC became increasingly prominent later.
