Who co-created The Office (UK) with Ricky Gervais?

The story behind the answer

Stephen Merchant co-created The Office (UK) with Ricky Gervais.

Merchant and Gervais jointly developed the mockumentary’s characters, writing and directing the series together. Gervais played David Brent, the self-important manager of Wernham Hogg’s Slough branch, while Merchant’s writing and production partnership helped shape the show’s painfully realistic workplace humour. Their collaboration made awkward pauses, minor social failures and office politics central sources of comedy.

The idea grew from an early project called Seedy Boss, a short film Merchant made during BBC producer training in 1998, with Gervais involved in the performance and development. That early experiment helped establish the tone and character concept that became The Office. Merchant also made a small on-screen appearance in the programme, but he is best known here as its co-creator, writer and director rather than as a principal cast member.

The Office was not created by Graham Linehan, Peter Kay or Armando Iannucci. Those comedians are associated with other major British television projects, which is why they can seem plausible in a quiz, but the credited creative partnership is specifically Gervais and Merchant.
