Who co-created Sesame Street with Lloyd Morrisett?

The story behind the answer

Joan Ganz Cooney co-created Sesame Street with Lloyd Morrisett.

Their partnership began with a 1966 conversation about whether television could help teach preschool children, especially those with limited access to early education. Cooney was an experienced television producer, while Morrisett was a Carnegie Corporation executive interested in using mass media to reach millions of children.

Cooney subsequently researched child development, education, and television and wrote a report titled The Potential Uses of Television in Preschool Education. Its recommendations helped shape Sesame Street’s educational structure, including the use of attention-grabbing television techniques to teach letters, numbers, vocabulary, and social skills.

Morrisett helped secure major financial support, while Cooney guided the program’s creative and organizational development. Together they established the Children’s Television Workshop, which produced Sesame Street after its premiere in 1969. A common mix-up is crediting Jim Henson, Jon Stone, or Joe Raposo as co-creators; all were crucial contributors, but the central co-creator pairing was Cooney and Morrisett.
