Which Queens studio has taped Sesame Street since its 1993 move?

The story behind the answer

Kaufman Astoria Studios is the Queens studio where Sesame Street has taped since its 1993 move. The Astoria facility gave the production more room for its expanding neighborhood set and new locations such as the Furry Arms hotel, a playground, and a dance studio.

Before Queens, Sesame Street was filmed in Manhattan. Its earliest home was Reeves Teletape Studios on the Upper West Side, and production later moved to a facility near Ninth Avenue and 55th Street. The Queens relocation followed roughly 24 years of Manhattan production.

Kaufman Astoria Studios has a much older screen history than Sesame Street. Built in 1920 for Famous Players-Lasky, it later became associated with Paramount and hosted productions involving the Marx Brothers and W. C. Fields. The site was renamed Kaufman Astoria Studios in 1982.

A common mix-up is Silvercup Studios, another prominent Queens production complex. Silvercup is strongly associated with New York television, but Sesame Street’s long-running Queens home is Kaufman Astoria Studios, in Astoria near the Museum of the Moving Image.
