Who co-created Rick and Morty with Justin Roiland?

The story behind the answer

Dan Harmon co-created Rick and Morty with Justin Roiland. Harmon was already known for creating the sitcom Community when he partnered with Roiland to develop the animated science-fiction comedy for Adult Swim. Their collaboration combined Harmon’s experience with television structure and character-driven comedy with Roiland’s animation work, improvisational style, and distinctive voice performances.

The series grew out of an earlier short parody created by Roiland for a film festival. That project reimagined Doc Brown and Marty McFly as an aggressively crude pair, which later evolved into Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith. Harmon and Roiland reshaped the concept into an original show about a cynical scientist and his anxious teenage grandson traveling through bizarre dimensions.

Scott Marder and Mike McMahan were important writers and producers associated with the series, while Seth MacFarlane created shows such as Family Guy. Neither co-created Rick and Morty. Harmon served as a major creative force and showrunner, helping balance the show’s wild science-fiction premises with family conflict, emotional consequences, and recurring philosophical themes.
