Patrick’s own Confessio says that, at the age of 16, he was seized by Irish raiders while staying at his family’s villa in Britain. Patrick came from a Romano-British Christian family. His father, Calpurnius, was a local official and church deacon, and his grandfather was a priest. The family’s villa was near a settlement Patrick called Bannavem Taburniae, but historians have not securely identified its location.

The raid occurred during a period when seaborne attacks and slave-taking connected Ireland and western Britain. Patrick later escaped after a dream led him toward a waiting ship. He eventually returned to Britain, studied for the clergy and went back to Ireland as a Christian missionary.

Later biographies add colourful details, but Patrick’s captivity and capture by Irish raiders are among the few facts grounded directly in his own writing.
