Saint Patrick is traditionally said to have founded the monastery at Saul in County Down.
According to tradition, Patrick landed near Saul after returning to Ireland as a Christian missionary. A local chieftain, Dichú, is said to have given him a barn that became an early church. Saul is therefore closely connected with stories about Patrick's missionary work.
The site is near Downpatrick, where tradition also places Patrick's burial. A modern church known as Saul Church stands on the hill associated with the early foundation.
These details come from later hagiographical tradition rather than contemporary records. Patrick's own writings confirm that he worked as a Christian missionary in Ireland, but they do not provide a complete, independently verifiable itinerary of every place associated with him.
