Susi Susanti became the first women's singles Olympic badminton champion at Barcelona 1992.
Badminton made its official Olympic debut at the 1992 Summer Games, and Susanti won Indonesia's first gold medal of those Games. She defeated South Korea's Bang Soo-hyun in the final, winning 5–11, 11–5, 11–3 under the scoring system then in use.
Susanti's victory was historically important for Indonesia, where badminton is one of the country's most prominent sports. Her husband, Alan Budikusuma, also won men's singles gold at Barcelona, giving the couple two Olympic badminton titles.
The event is distinct from badminton's demonstration appearances at earlier Olympics. Barcelona 1992 was the first official Olympic competition, with singles and doubles events for both men and women.
